Error Code EA3F4C1E Occurs When Opening .twb Workbook Connected to Excel Data

Issue

When opening an unpackaged workbook (.twb) with a connection to Excel, the below error occurs, and could not open it.
This error occurs after the Excel file was edited. 

An error occurred while communicating with data source

Bad Connection: Tableau could not connect to the data source.

Error Code: EA3F4C1E

InsertData: unbound column

 

Environment

  • Tableau Desktop 2021.4
  • Windows 10
  • Excel

Resolution

Please try the following workarounds.
Option 1
Download and install the latest version of Tableau Desktop and try to open the workbook again.

Option 2
Follow the steps in the article below to clear the cache of Tableau Desktop.
Clearing the Tableau Desktop Query Cache
Option 3
Make a copy of the Excel file in a new directory and delete the original file.
Then open the Tableau workbook and you will be asked where your data source is.
Pick the copied Excel file saved in the new directory.



 

Cause

Connection to the Excel file may be broken after the file is edited.
