Issue

On Tableau Server versions releases prior to version 2023.3.1 (or newer), when installing Tableau Server on Windows Server 2022 it throws the error seen below:

This job failed due to unexpected error: 'ServiceOperationTimeoutException'
One or more services failed to reach their expected state. node1: backgrounder_0.20213.21.0902.2150: Failed to reach requested state. Current state: UNINSTALL_FAILED Error Message: java.util.concurrent.TimeoutException: Command '[C:\ProgramData\Tableau\Tableau Server\data\tabsvc\services\backgrounder_0.20213.21.0902.2150\backgrounder\control-backgrounder.exe, uninstall]' timed out after 170 SECONDS
Initialization terminated at step 3 of 34: Removing services failed.

Environment

  • Tableau Server
    • 2023.3.1 (or newer)
  • Windows Server 2022

Resolution

Upgrade Tableau Server to version 2023.3.1 or newer

  • For Tableau Server versions 2023.3.1 (or newer), Windows Server 2022 is a supported operating system as these versions contain the necessary fixes for the known incompatibilities that prevented a successful installation in previous versions.
  • For any Tableau Server versions released prior to 2023.3.1, it will be necessary to use an alternate supported version of Windows Server instead, such as Microsoft Windows Server 2016, or 2019 (x64).

Cause

Tableau previously did not support Windows Server 2022 as an operating system for Tableau Server. There were known incompatibilities which prevented the installation from succeeding which have now been addressed in newer versions of Tableau Server. See Known Issue W-12894454 for more information.
