Error "unexpected Run Time Exception Happens. An Unexpected Error Is Caught." When Running Flow On Tableau Cloud

Issue

When using Tableau Cloud to run a published flow, the flow fails to run and the following error occurs:

Flow failed. Try running the flow again or try republishing the flow, then run the flow again.
Or
Unexpected run time exception happens. An unexpected error is caught.

Environment

  • Tableau Cloud
  • Tableau Prep Builder

Resolution

Open the flow in Tableau Prep Builder and close out any duplicate connections.
  1. Download the affected flow from Tableau Cloud.
  2. Open the flow in Tableau Prep Builder.
  3. In the left hand pane, keep only one connection and remove all the others (all other duplicate connections).
  4. (Optional) Re-wire any input node that shows error due to Step 3.
  5. Run the flow in Tableau Prep Builder to ensure the flow can run successfully.
  6. Once the flow runs successfully in Tableau Prep Builder, publish the modified flow to Tableau Cloud.

Cause

This issue can occur if a flow has multiple duplicated connections that have the same connection ID. This issue is investigated by Tableau Development team.
