Custom Views Lost after Editing Workbook

Published: 20 Aug 2020

Issue

After updates are published for a workbook, custom views are lost.

Environment

Tableau Server
Tableau Cloud

Resolution

Use one of the following workarounds:
  • Change names of worksheets using web edit only, rather than Tableau Desktop.
  • Do not change worksheet names.

Cause

Custom views use the worksheet or dashboard name to map the custom view to the worksheet or dashboard it is based on. If the name changes, the custom view has no worksheet or dashboard to to refer to and is deleted.

Additional Information

The above scenario is specific to custom views being "lost" as a result of the worksheet name change, but please note the custom views can be broken or influenced if, for example the field(s) used for making the custom view is changed or deleted from the data source used. If there is a filter using "sub category" field to define a custom view and if it's removed/changed for any reasons, the custom view itself may still exist but the viz/view is likely changed and may not be displayed properly as expected.

Please make sure the fields/columns, calc field, parameter, etc. used to define a custom view still exists and functions as expected.
