Question

How to publish a data source and publish a flow file with Tableau Prep Builder.

Environment

  • Tableau Server
  • Tableau Cloud
  • Tableau Prep

Answer

In Tableau Prep, which is called Tableau Prep Builder, you can publish a data source to Tableau Server or Tableau Cloud.  A Tableau Prep Builder output step from a flow can be directed to publish a data source to Tableau Server or Tableau Cloud.

In contrast, with Tableau Prep Conductor enabled on Tableau Cloud or Tableau Server, you publish a flow, the instructions for refreshing the data to the server, and a schedule to refresh your data.  Tableau Prep Conductor on Tableau Server or Tableau Cloud allows you to manage your flows published from Tableau Prep Builder, the client software.

With Tableau Prep Conductor enabled, you publish flows to Tableau Server or Tableau Cloud the following way:

From Tableau Prep Builder, select Publish Flow from the Server menu.  Your flow will be available on Tableau Server or Tableau Cloud where you can run and schedule a task to run your flows.
