Resolution
Option 1
Check the product key in the Tableau Customer Portal to validate the license is current and that it is typed exactly as shown in the Tableau Customer Portal (remember to include the dashes).
Option 2
Check the time of the OS hosting the Tableau Server to ensure the time is set correctly before activating the product key.
Option 3
The product key may be at a maximum activation status. Deactivate any prior installations if they are available. Contact Tableau Technical Support if the license has been activated too many times and deactivating previous installations are not possible.
Option 4
Work with the network team at your organization to check internet access to the Tableau license service by reviewing the URLs here.
Cause
This general activation error can occur for several reasons:
Maximum activated key
Invalid key (no dashes or typed incorrectly)
Expired key
Incorrect time of the OS hosting the Tableau Server
Inability to reach the Tableau license server outside the network
