Issue

When trying to downgrade a workbook by selecting File > Export as Version in Tableau Desktop, the following error may occur:

Save workbook failed: The workbook cannot be downgraded because it contains a .hyper extract.

This error may occur even after changing to a live connection by selecting Data > [data source name] and un-checking Use Extract.

Environment

  • Tableau Desktop 10.5 or newer
  • Windows

Resolution

Remove the extract so that the workbook no longer references the extract:
  1. Select Data > [data source name] > Extract > Remove.
  2. On the Remove Extract dialog box, select either option based on your preference and click OK.
  3. Try using the Export as Version command again.

Cause

The workbook is still linked to the .hyper extract even though the Use Extract option is deselected.
