Value Analysis Disabled Due to User Filters

Published: 14 Jan 2019
Last Modified Date: 30 Nov 2019

Issue

After asking ASK Data the following question “> sum of Sales, profit is greater than $10,000, filter Country to United States”, the returned results are not as expected. The following message may be displayed:

Value analysis disabled due to user filters.
Remove them from the data source to enable ASK Data
to answer more questions and recognize field values.

Environment

  • Tableau Server 2019.1
  • Tableau Online
  • ASK Data

Resolution

You need to type a more specific question, like the following example:
> sales profit over 10,000 country is “United States”

Cause

Some data sources support analysis, others do not. A user needs to know which is which and adjust ASK Data queries accordingly.

ASK Data and Row Level Security

A data source which support row level security is not supported by ASK Data analysis. Ask Data does not index values or compute metadata for data sources or fields with row-level security. The values are not computed, cached or indexed in Elasticsearch (the back-end "smart" search engine). You can still use Ask Data, but the system will not automatically recognize values without explicitly specifying the fields and using quotation marks. Also, some intelligent inference features will not be available.

Special querying language needs to be applied in order to get a useful result. For more information, see Additional Information below.

Additional Information

When a data source supports analysis*, you can ask the following:

> sales over 10,000 in America

And get the result:
> sum of Sales, profit is greater than $10,000, filter Country to United States
Which is correct.

Without data source analysis you might get something like this result:

> sum of Sales, quantity is greater than 10,000

Quantity is never greater than 10,000, so that filter does not make sense, and America is not recognized so the filter is ignored.

To get the correct result you’d need to type:

> sales profit over 10,000 country is “United States”
This ASK query will produce the expected result.

A data source which support row level security does not support ASK Data analysis.
