Unable to View or Connect to Published Data Sources (from Tableau Desktop) on Sites That Don't Allow Connected Clients

Published: 09 Oct 2019

Issue

In Tableau Desktop 2019.3, when selecting Tableau Server on the data source page to connect to a published data source, you may notice that one or more published data sources are missing and/or cannot be used.

However, you also may notice that Online users can see and use published data source from a web browser, and that prior to Tableau Desktop 2019.3 (e.g. 2019.2) , published data source appeared as expected.

Environment

  • Tableau Online
  • Tableau Desktop 2019.3.0

Resolution

Option 1

Upgrade to Tableau Desktop 2019.3.2, 2019.4.1 or a newer version. Click here for downloads of current and previous versions of Tableau Desktop: Tableau Desktop Downloads and Release Notes.  For more information on current releases, see Upgrade Tableau Desktop and Desktop Upgrade.

Option 2

Follow the workaround described below:

  1. Login Tableau Online site as site administrator user.
  2. Move to Settings > Authentication tab
  3. In the Connected Clients section, select "Allow connected clients for this Tableau Online site".

Cause

This behavior is related to Issue ID 1008099 which has been fixed in a recent version of Tableau Desktop.
