Issue

When performing a full backup and restore of Tableau Server that is configured with SAML, after importing the settings into the new Tableau Server without configuring the SAML again, the Tableau Server is not able to start and the following error is displayed in vizportal log:

ERROR com.tableausoftware.samlauthentication.services.SAMLMetadataLoader -

Failed to load the SP private key from our SAML configuration.

java.lang.IllegalArgumentException:

The key file <Tableau Server Path>/data/tabsvc/config/vizportal_x.xxxxx.xx.xxxx.xxxx/files/samlkeyfile.key was not found

Environment

  • Tableau Server
  • Server-Wide SAML

Resolution

After running the "tsm setting import" command to import the configuration and topology into the new Tableau Server but before running "tsm pending-changes apply" command, configure the SAML setting again following the appropriate help page below:

Windows:
Configure Server-Wide SAML

Linux:
Configure Server-Wide SAML

Cause

The SAML configurations are exported by the "tsm setting export" command without most authentication assets, including the SSL certificate and key file.
