Unable to Sign into Tableau Cloud Using Touch ID Built-in Authenticator From Tableau Prep and Tableau Desktop

Issue

When trying to sign into Tableau Cloud with MFA, an error occurs:

There are no built-in authenticators, like Touch ID, available to this browser.

Environment

  • Tableau Cloud
  • Tableau Prep
  • Tableau Desktop
  • Tableau Bridge
  • Tableau Content Migration Tool

Resolution

As noted in our product documentation, built-in authenticators including Touch ID, Face ID, and Windows Hello cannot be used when authenticating to Tableau Cloud from Tableau Desktop, Tableau Prep Builder, Tableau Bridge, and the Tableau Content Migration Tool.  If one of these verification methods have been registered, you (and your users) can register a different verification method from your My Account Settings page in Tableau Cloud.

Please note that 'Recovery Codes'  is not recommended for a primary method as it's for emergency scenarios only.

Cause

Built-in Authenticator is not supported in Tableau products (Tableau Desktop, Tableau Prep, Tableau Bridge, and Tableau Content Migration Tool) with an embedded browser.
