Issue

When attempting to restore a backup from Windows Tableau Server to Linux Tableau Server, the restore command on Linux crashes after a short time and the following error occurs in the logs tabadmincontroller.log:

"unacceptable character... special characters are not allowed"

Environment

  • Tableau Server 10.5.0
  • CentOS 7 Linux

Resolution

  1. Download and install the free archiver application 7zip: http://www.7-zip.org/download.html (the steps may also work in another archiver application)
  2. Right click the backup file and select 7zip-> Open Archive
  3. Double click the config.yml file and edit it in Notepad or another text editor
  4. Remove any special characters from the file. For example:
    1. In the line: servercrashupload.scheduled_time: 01:00:00 AM Mitteleuropäische Sommerzeit
    2. Remove the German character "ä", for example change it to "a": servercrashupload.scheduled_time: 01:00:00 AM Mitteleuropaische Sommerzeit
    3. Then save the file inside the backup.
  5. Move the edited backup file to the Linux machine and restore the backup - it should work then.

Cause

Special characters in the backup configuration file could not be processed.
