Unable to Refresh Extract when Field used in Extract Filter is Renamed

When attempting to refresh extract, then the following error message occurs:

Errors occurred while reloading the data source.
Field '<name>' which is included for filtering does not exist


  • Tableau Desktop


  1. Right-click the data source in the data pane, and uncheck Use Extract.
  2. Click OK for the error message that pops up.
  3. The affected field should now have a red exclamation point in the data pane. Right-click on the affected field, and  select Replace References…
  4. Right-click the data source in the data pane, and select Extract Data.
  5. Click Extract.

Please note that if Use Extract is selected in step 4 instead of Extract Data, Tableau Desktop will attempt to use the old extract which contains invalid references.


A field that is being used in an extract filter has changed name in the original data source.
