Unable to Install, Upgrade, or Restart Tableau Server

Published: 23 Jan 2020
Last Modified Date: 28 Jul 2020

Issue

After a reboot of Tableau Server, or while installing/upgrading, Tableau Server is unable to start, and tsm status -v shows all services either unavailable or in an error state.

Environment

  • Tableau Server
  • Windows Server

Resolution

To resolve this issue, confirm that the Run As Service ("RAS") account for Tableau Server has the necessary permissions applied, and that no Group Policies are overriding the local permissions.

As a potential workaround, change the RAS account or re-apply permissions for this account.

Cause

Windows error code [-1073741515] is not a Tableau Server error code; it generally indicates either missing DLL files (relevant for install/upgrade issues in particular), or issues with permissions/Group Policy.
