Unable to Generate Complete Tableau Server Logs

Published: 09 Dec 2014
Last Modified Date: 08 Oct 2018

Issue

When collecting Tableau Server log files for a specific date, the log files may be incomplete and only contain:
  • config folder
  • tabsvc.yml
  • netstat-info.txt
  • buildversion.txt
  • wgserver.checksum
The command prompt may show messages such as:

zip error: Nothing to do!
*** zip had either errors or warnings.
*** Some files may not have been added from D:/Program Files/Tableau/Tableau Server/logs

Environment

  • Tableau Server

Resolution

Option 1
Specify a date that is in the past.

Option 2
Command Prompt / Terminal does not have sufficient Privileges to execute the ziplog. Run the Windows command prompt or Linux Terminal as an Administrator.

Windows:

  1. Right click on the Start Menu and select Command Prompt (Admin)
  2. Try to run the command
  3. If that does not work, click on Start
  4. Type cmd
  5. Right click on CMD and select Run As User or Run as Different User
  6. Enter Tableau Server credentials

Linux:

  1. Run the ziplog command the following command
sudo tsm maintenance ziplogs [options] [global options]

  2. Receive prompt to enter Administrator Password

Cause

The ziplogs command has been run for a date in the future, there are no log files existing yet for that date.

Ziplog command was run in a Windows Command prompt or Linux terminal with insufficient privileges.
