When attempting to connect to Snowflake data sources in Tableau Desktop or Tableau Prep Builder on macOS, connecting is not successful and results in the following error:
"To use this connector, you need to download and install the driver first."

  • Tableau Desktop
  • Tableau Prep Builder
  • macOS with "Apple Silicon" (M1 or M2) processor

Install and configure the mac64 version of the Snowflake driver.
  1. Navigate to and download the latest driver.
  2. Double-click the downloaded dmg file to mount the disk image.
  3. Double-click on the installer file iODBC-SDK.pkg and follow the prompts to install the driver.
  4. Once installation is complete, close and re-launch Tableau Desktop/Prep Builder if it was already running.

The ODBC driver designed for macOS devices with M1 or M2 processors (sometimes referred to as Apple Silicon) is not currently compatible with Tableau Desktop.

Additional Information

If the message "To use this connector, you need to download and install the driver first." continues to occur after installation, the following additional steps may be necessary:
  1. Navigate to Applications and launch ODBC Manager.
  2. Run iODBC Administrator64 from Applications > iODBC.
  3. Select the Driver tab.
  4. Click Add.
  5. Create a new entry for the driver, with the driver name Snowflake and below file path:

Note regarding driver versions and naming:

  • The "mac64" Snowflake driver suggested in this article is for macOS machines with Intel processors. It works on both Intel and Apple Silicon macOS machines.
  • The currently incompatible driver is the Snowflake "macaarch64" driver, built specifically for Apple Silicon.
  • Both versions are available at
