When trying to connect to a OneDrive account owned by an organization from Tableau Desktop, the following error occurs in the Sign in to OneDrive window:
"You cannot access this application
Tableau Desktop needs permission to access resources in your organization that only an admin can grant. Please ask an admin to grant permission to this app before you can use it."

  • Tableau Desktop

Option 1

Contact your Office 365 admin and request Integrated Apps be turned on.

Option 2

Contact your Office 365 admin to grant admin consent permissions to Tableau Desktop. Note that an internal server error will occur after performing this action; this is expected.

On the machine where Tableau Desktop is installed, in the Registry create a new string value with the following details under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Tableau\<version>\Settings
  • Data: ?callbackurl=%1&username=%2&instanceurl=%3&prompt=provider_default

Open Terminal and run the following command: defaults write com.tableau.Tableau-<version>.plist Settings.GALOP_QUERY_FORMAT -string "?callbackurl=%1&username=%2&instanceurl=%3&prompt=provider_default"

Where <version> is the version of Tableau Desktop being used (e.g.: 2020.3). If multiple versions are in use, perform the same operation on Windows or Mac for each version.

Note: The instructions in this section are intended for an IT professional who is comfortable editing the registry

Integrated Apps is turned off in the organization's Office 365 admin center.
