Issue

After mapping a Google Drive to a local folder, it is unable to use the Google Sheets (.gsheet) file in Tableau Desktop / Tableau Prep.  If the file is in Excel format, it can be specified, but if it is in spreadsheet format, it will not appear in the Connections window.

If you drag and drop the .gsheet file into Tableau Desktop / Tableau Prep, the below error will occur:

This file is not in a recognizable format. See the Help documentation for a list of the supported file types.

  • Google Sheets

Resolution

Tableau does not support  Google Sheets format. Please consider the below options:

Option 1

Use the Google Drive connector to connect to the .gsheet file.
Please check the details on the Tableau Online Help for Google Drive.

Option 2

Change the Google Sheet to an Excel file.

If you need to use this file locally, open the file in your browser, download the sheet file as an Excel file as shown below, and upload it directly to Google Drive.

Tableau Desktop / Tableau Prep will then connect to the file as an Excel file.
