Unable to configure multiple instance of elastic server on linux. The Tableau Server logs may contain an error similar to the following:

[1] bootstrap checks failed
[1]: max virtual memory areas vm.max_map_count [65530] is too low, increase to at least [262144]

After configuring multiple instance of elastic server, the following issues may occur.

  • Users cannot select which site to sign-in when there are multi-sites.
  • No left navigation pane to change a site or remove a site even though sign into a site.
  • Unable to use 'My Account Settings'.

Additionally, Vizportal logs may contain an error similar to the following:

Exception raised by call target: Collection not found: site
org.apache.solr.common.SolrException: Collection not found: site

  • Tableau Server 2019.2 and later versions
  • Linux

Upgrade to Tableau Server 2019.2.10 or later

As a Server Admin, use one of the following workarounds:
  • Remove the Search&Browse service from node2 and node3. ( Note that adding Search&Browse service again also works.)
  • Change vm.max_map_count before installation with following steps.
    1. Add the following line in /etc/sysctl.conf on all the Linux nodes.
    2. Run the following command to reload the change on all the Linux nodes.
          sysctl -p
    3.  Install all the Linux nodes and configure Elastic server on multiple nodes.
  • Reinstall node 2 and node3 configuring without Elastic Server.

This is a know issue that is fixed in more recent version of Tableau Server.
