Error "Unable to change the join clause information for <field name>" When Opening or Creating a Data Source

Last Modified Date: 27 Jun 2018

When opening an existing datasource with joins, or when creating a new datasource with joins, the following errors occur:
'unable to change the join clause information for "<Field Name>"
unable to update relation'

Tableau Desktop 10.0 - 10.2

Option 1

Replace the data source with a new copy of itself. For more information, see Replace Data Sources.

Option 2

Avoid using two instances of the same field name from the same table in multiple joins
  1. Create the first join.
  2. Create the second join.
  3. Before editing any of the new join information, rename the field in question in the data pane at the bottom of the screen so that the common field has a different name in each table.
Now the joins clauses should be editable without any issues.
