Unable to Change a User's Site Role to A Server Administrator When Site-SAML is Enabled

Issue

After Site-SAML is enabled, when trying to change the site role of a user (whose authentication type is set to SAML) to Server Administrator, the following error occurs:

Could not promote User(Username) to Server Admin. Details


When expanding the Details section, the following error is displayed:

"An unexpected error occurred"


Additionally, the folowing error can be found in the vizportal logs
ERROR com.tableausoftware.api.webclient.util.BatchedActionExecutor - Exception raised by call target for key [35]: Target user cannot be System Administrator, since the auth type is configured via a 3rd party IdP. (errorCode=77)
com.tableausoftware.domain.exceptions.PermissionDeniedException: Target user cannot be System Administrator, since the auth type is configured via a 3rd party IdP. (errorCode=77)

Environment

  • Tableau Server 
  • Site-specific SAML

Resolution

Change the user's authentication type to Server Default (Local).

Cause

A user with site-SAML authentication cannot be set as Server Administrator.
