TODAY() function returns NULL and couldn't be assigned to parameter.

Issue

When trying to assign today's date to the parameter by using the calculated field has TODAY() function to "Value when workbook opens" of "Create Parameter", "value is null and couldn't be assigned to this parameter." error appeared.

The calculation is valid, but for some reason, it returns null.

Environment

  • Tableau Desktop
  • Tableau Cloud
  • Tableau Server

Resolution

Option 1

Make sure the data source have one or more records.

Option 2

Use Dashboard Extension: Date Updater

Cause

If the data source has no records, the calculation field of TODAY() function cannot return a value and will be NULL.
