Text Wrap Not Working Properly After Upgrade To 2021.1 Where Words Are Being Truncated in the Middle of the Word and Moving to the Next Line

Issue

After Tableau 2021.1 upgrade, text wrapping is not properly wrapping words. Words are being truncated in the middle of the word and moved to the next line.

Environment

  • Tableau Cloud
  • Tableau Public
  • Tableau Server

Resolution

Option 1

Upgrade to 2021.1.6, 2021.2.2, 2021.3.0 or later versions.

Option 2

Alternatively, use one of the following workarounds:
  • Change the text wrap formatting to "Automatic" instead of "On."
  • Force server-side rendering on a per-session basis by appending ?:render=false to the end of the dashboard URL. For more information, see Disable Client-Side Rendering

Cause

Changes in the 2021.1 release fundamentally changed how we render views on the web.  In this case, we are relying on the browser to do text layout instead of doing it on Tableau Server.  This results in some visual changes in certain cases and wrapping is one of the cases where we are relying on some more intrinsic browser behavior.
