Tableau Server Activation (Non-ATR) Fails With "An error occurred: 500506, Licensing Error"

When attempting to activate Tableau Server online, the TSM web UI may submit without the key showing in the TSM UI after the step is completed.

At the command line, you see:

The server encountered an unexpected error processing the request. Look at the server logs for more information.

In the TSM log, the error reports:

ERROR com.tableausoftware.tabadmin.TSMErrorHandler - An error occurred: 500506, Licensing Error
2022-06-14 19:48:07.455 main : ERROR com.tableausoftware.tabadmin.cli.Console - Licensing Error: Licensing Service Unavailable
com.tableausoftware.tabadmin.TabadminServerException: Licensing Error: Licensing Service Unavailable

  • Tableau Server 2020.4 and newer
  • Flexera activation (Non-ATR)
  • Windows
  • Linux

Follow the Configuring Proxies for Tableau Server instructions to ensure that your forward proxy is correctly configured.  Linux instructions are here.

An issue with your forward proxy is preventing the response from Tableau's licensing services from being received by Tableau Server, resulting in a failed activation.

Additional Information

Because TSM does not activate the key as desired and no error appears to the TSM UI, do not activate the key again.  Activating the key multiple times can result in a maximum activation error.  The license request goes out to the Tableau License Server and records the request but due to network issues, the response is not read by Tableau Server.
