Tableau Server on Windows Fails User/Group Provisioning Sync After Upgrading to 2021.2

Published: 09 Apr 2021

Issue

After upgrading to Tableau Server 2021.2, Active Directory group sync and user provisioning fail.

Environment

  • Tableau Server 2021.2 and later
  • Active Directory
  • Windows

Resolution

Option 1 (recommended):

Investigate and resolve why secure connection are failing. Fix associated issues.
Example troubleshooting provided here: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/troubleshoot/windows-server/identity/ldap-over-ssl-connection-issues

Option 2 (if willing to proceed with insecure fallback with insecure channel):

Disable the setting via
tsm configuration set wgserver.domain.allow_insecure_connection -k -v true

Note: In order to avoid any degraded functionality by Tableau Server, you can apply the tsm configuration prior to upgrade to 2021.2 with the “force keys” command:

tsm configuration set -k wgserver.domain.allow_insecure_connection -v true –force-keys

Cause

Tableau Server 2021.2 and newer on Windows no longer support insecure fallback behavior which may have allowed Server Admins to unknowingly proceed with an insecure setup. You must now explicitly opt in to allow for insecure fallback.
