Tableau Server Does Not Always Start Up After Operating System Reboot

Issue

After rebooting the operating system of the computer running Tableau Server, Tableau Server might not automatically start up.

Environment

  • Tableau Server 2018.2 and later on Windows
  • Tableau Server 10.5 and later on Linux

Resolution

This behavior is expected. Starting from Tableau Server 2018.2 on Windows and Tableau Server 10.5 on Linux (all versions which use TSM), Tableau Server will always remain in the state it was in prior to the operating system (OS) reboot.

The current behavior is as below:
  • If Tableau Server is in a stopped state prior to the OS reboot, Tableau Server will not start up after the OS reboot has completed.
  • If Tableau Server is in a running state prior to the OS reboot, Tableau Server will automatically start up after the OS reboot has completed.
Note: Leaving Tableau Server running prior to an OS reboot is not recommended, as issues may occur during startup. We recommend stopping Tableau Server before an OS reboot, and then manually starting Tableau Server after the reboot has completed

Cause

This functionality change was introduced with Tableau Services Manager, and is by design.
