'Tableau Server Client File Service 0' status is unavailable

Issue

tsm status -v returns the following:
 
DEGRADED
'Tableau Server Client File Service 0' status is unavailable.

Client File Service (CFS) log shows the following error:

 (\clientfileservice_0.2018xxxx\logs\clientfileservice_nodex-0.log.20xxxx):
WARN com.tableausoftware.tdfs.filestore.status.FileStoreStatusServiceHandler - A problem was encountered while building file store status
java.lang.IllegalStateException: Encountered unknown NodeState: ReadOnly 

The above conditions may appear even while all other processes are running including Filestore, VizQL and Backgrounder.

Environment

  • Tableau Server 2018.2 and later

Resolution

The following options can be used to work around the issue:

Option 1:
  1. On the affected node go to services.msc
  2. Restart the Tableau Server Client File Service (even if Tableau Server Client File Service is running).
Option 2:
  1. If it is possible to restart Tableau Server, re-add the CFS to the affected node. Find more information on specific steps in Configure Client File Service.

Cause

This appears to be a stability issue causing performance problems judging from the cases.
