Tableau Prep flow output step fails after moving flow to new Tableau Server instance during backup and restore process

Issue

The Tableau Server environment identified as output location in a Tableau Prep output step is not automatically updated when a published flow is moved from one Tableau Server environment to another via the backup/restore process.

Environment

  • Tableau Server
  • Tableau Prep

Resolution

  • To have the Tableau Prep flow output steps updated to a new target instance of Tableau Server automatically is an enhancement request. Currently, the output step of the flow must be updated manually and then re-run in Tableau Prep to publish it to the new Tableau Server instance.
  • Manually update Tableau Prep flow output step with new Tableau Server login location and credentials and republish to Tableau Server.

Cause

When the output step of a Tableau Prep flow is set to a specific target Tableau Server instance to be published as a data source and then that flow is moved to a different Tableau Server environment via the backup/restore process, the target Tableau Server instance is not automatically updated to the new instance.
  • Basically, if you set Server A as the target instance to publish a flow to as the output step of that flow and then move the flow to Server B via a Tableau Server backup/restore, the target server is not updated to Server B automatically as part of the backup/restore process
