Tableau Desktop Quits Unexpectedly when Using Amazon S3 (beta) Connector and Japanese Characters are in My Tableau Repository Path

Issue

When trying to connect to Amazon S3 with a connector from the Tableau Exchange,  Tableau Desktop quits unexpectedly.

Clicking on Amazon S3 (beta), causes Tableau Desktop to crash.

Environment

Resolution

Option 1

Upgrade to Tableau Desktop 2023.1.4 or 2023.2.1 or newer.

Option 2

Change the "My Tableau Repository/Connectors" path to not contain Japanese or CJK characters.

Step1: Change the RepositoryLanguage value in Windows Registry or Mac plist.
  • Windows: 
  1. Open the registry editor.
  2. Go to Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Tableau\Tableau <version>\Settings.
  3. Change the [RepositoryLanguage] value to [en_US-US].
  • MacOS:
    • execute the command below:
defaults write /Users/<username>/Library/Preferences/com.tableau.Tableau-2023.1.plist Settings.RepositoryLanguage en_US-US

Step 2:
After performing Step 1 and restarting Tableau Desktop, if the My Tableau Repository location is not in only ASCII characters, continue and create a new folder.

Create a new folder that does not contain Japanese characters and change your My Tableau Repository location to the new folder location.

Cause

An update to the product has been completed in a maintenance release in 2023.
