Tableau Desktop License Key Automatically Deactivated after Restoring Image from Virtual Machine

Tableau Desktop installed on a virtual machine (e.g. AWS EC2) gets deactivated after the VM image is restored from a clone copy/snapshot.

  • Tableau Desktop

1. Deactivate the Tableau Desktop license prior to cloning a Virtual Machine.
2. Activate the Tableau Desktop license after the VM image is restored.

This is by design.
When using a virtual machine, Tableau refers to the following machine-specific information
1. MAC address
2. virtual machine ID (UUID)

If the above machine-specific information has changed after restoring from a backup, then the license key activation will be "Broken" and the license key will automatically be deactivated.
