Tableau Desktop quits unexpectedly when creating dashboards. This behavior is intermittent.

Additionally, you notice the following behaviors:
  • Sheets cannot be selected within a dashboard.
  • When placing the cursor on a mark card (such as Detail, Color, etc.) the tooltip persists.

  • Tableau Desktop 10.3 - 10.5
  • Windows

Option 1: Upgrade

Upgrade to Tableau Desktop 2018.1 or a newer version. Click here for downloads of current and previous versions of Tableau Desktop: Tableau Desktop Downloads and Release Notes.  For more information on current releases, see Upgrade Tableau Desktop and Desktop Upgrade.

Option 2: Run Tableau Desktop as an administrator.

To run Tableau Desktop by default as administrator:
  1. Navigate to C:\Program Files\Tableau <version>\bin
  2. Right click on tableau.exe > Properties > Compatibility > Run as an administrator

Option 3: Launch Tableau Desktop from a Command Prompt

  1. Open Command Prompt by navigating the Start Menu and typing 'command'. Hit Enter.
  2. In the Command Prompt, enter the following commands in succession ('<version>' will need to be modified to match the version of Tableau Desktop being used):

    cd C:\Program Files\Tableau\Tableau <version>\bin

These behaviors are related to a known issue with ID 673027 which was fixed in a version of Tableau Desktop. Such behaviors are also associated with high CPU usage which occasionally leads to the application closing.
