Subscription Emails for Tableau Cloud Delayed by 15-30 Minutes Using Mimecast

Issue

Subscription emails in Tableau Cloud are delayed by 15-30 minutes, and are not received immediately upon being sent from Tableau Cloud.

Environment

  • Tableau Cloud
  • Mimecast

Resolution

Work with your IT team to create a greylisting bypass policy in Mimecast for mail sent from @mandrillapp.com. This will result in the subscription emails not being delayed.

Cause

Tableau subscription emails are delivered via a third party service @mandrillapp.com, which generates random unique sender addresses. Mimecast applies Greylisting to the unique sender address upon initially receiving the email from Tableau, when Mimecast hasn't seen the combination of envelope address, recipient address, and sending IP before. Tableau will attempt to send the email again after being rejected by Mimecast the first time, but it is accepted the 2nd time, as the combination is recognized from the first attempt, resulting in the delayed email being delivered.
