SSL “Certificate verify failed” or "Authorization required" Error

When you try to sign in to Tableau Server by using tabcmd, one of the following command-line errors might occur:

Tableau Server 8.0 and 8.1

  *** certificate verify failed

Tableau Server 8.1

  *** Authorization required

  • Tableau Server 8.0 and 8.1
  • SSL

  • When you log in, add the --no-certcheck global option to the tabcmd command.

    For example:

    tabcmd login -s https:// -u -p --no-certcheck

    Note: When you use the --no-certcheck option, the data sent to Tableau Server will be encrypted, but the SSL certificate is not validated, so the data is not secure.

Tableau Server performs a certificate validation check when you use tabcmd. If Tableau Server is not using a public certificate authority, the sign in fails with the “certificate verify failed” or "Authentication required" error.

Additional Information

  • With a default login command, tabcmd output appears as below:

    C:\Program Files (x86)\Tableau\Tableau Server\8.0\bin>tabcmd login -s https://servername -u admin -p admin

    ===== Creating new session
    =====     Server:   https://servername/
    =====     Username: admin
    ===== Connecting to server...
      *** certificate verify failed
