Sort Order Changes When Workbook is Published

Published: 08 Mar 2019
Last Modified Date: 04 Nov 2019

Issue

When a workbook is published from Tableau Desktop 2019.1 to Tableau Server 2018.3, the sort order for a field in a text table is changed to the order in the data source.

Environment

  • Tableau Desktop 2019.1
  • Tableau Server 2018.3

Resolution

To retain the sort order when publishing to Tableau Server 2018.3, use the following steps:
  1. Open the workbook in Tableau Desktop 2019.1.
  2. Export the workbook to version 2018.3 by selecting File > Export as Version > Tableau 2018.3 > Export, and save the workbook.
  3. Open the version 2018.3 workbook in Tableau Desktop 2018.3 and publish it using this version.

Cause

As noted in the warning message at the bottom of the Publish Workbook to Tableau Server dialog:
Server is running an older version than your copy of Tableau Desktop. The workbook will be downgrade on the server and may lose some functionality. All datasources must be embedded in the workbook.

Additional Information

The version 2018.3 workbook exported in Tableau Desktop will not have the same sort functionality as the 2019.1 version since nested sorting improvements were added in version 2019.1.
