Snowflake OAuth Never Authenticates with Virtual Connection

Published: 01 Apr 2023
Last Modified Date: 03 Apr 2023

Issue

When using the Snowflake connector for creating a Virtual Connection in Tableau Server, the spinner icon with an 'Authenticating to Snowflake...' message appears indefinitely and the Virtual Connection data source is not created. In this scenario, a private link for the Snowflake data source and an OAuth configuration for authenticating to the data are in use.

Environment

  • Tableau Server 2023.1 (and prior versions), with Data Management license
  • Windows Server 2016; Windows Server 2019
  • Snowflake hosted on AWS; Snowflake hosted on Azure

Resolution

Currently, to use a Snowflake data connection with a Virtual Connection in Tableau Server, obtain a local link to access the Snowflake database and select the data authentication option, Username and password, for the data connection.

Cause

This is a known issue that currently is under investigation by the product management and development teams.
