Set Actions Not Working as Intended for Asymmetric Drill Down

Published: 29 Oct 2021

Issue

When using set actions to drill down a hierarchy, one of the actions may open more than one level in the hierarchy.

Environment

  • Tableau Desktop 2018.3 and newer

Resolution

Use the following steps to reset the configuration of the sets:
  1. Expose the set controls for the four sets used in the view: If using a dashboard, select the main worksheet on the dashboard. Then click the arrow in the upper corner to open the shortcut menu > Sets > <name of set>. If using a worksheet, right-click the set in the Data pane, and select 'Show Set'.
  2. Reset the view (hit the 'Esc' key) so that all the sets are empty.
  3. On the view, select a member of the first dimension in the hierarchy (least granular) to add it to the set.
  4. Using the set controls, clear all the sets for the dimensions that are lower in the hierarchy, so that no members are selected.
  5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 for the each subsequent level in the hierarchy.
  6. Hit 'Esc' to reset the view. The drill down should now work as expected, and the set controls can be removed.

Cause

One of the sets in the hierarchy may be set to 'Use all'.
