Servers with Only 16GB of RAM Cannot Always Start Tableau Server 2021.4 and Newer

Issue

Tableau Server 2021.4 and later may not start up successfully on some hosts with only 16GB of RAM, even if previous versions of Tableau Server were able to operate on the same host.

Environment

  • Tableau Server 2021.4 and later
  • Host machine with 16GB of RAM

Resolution

Increase the memory allocation for hosts running Tableau Server. Tableau's minimum production recommendation is 32GB for versions 2021.3 and older, 64GB for versions 2021.4 and newer.

Alternately, reduce the memory used by non-Tableau software on the host by disabling or uninstalling unneeded services and software.

Cause

The memory footprint of Tableau Server has increased over time; this is normal as new processes are added to provide additional functionality.

We have discovered that, depending on how much memory is consumed by the operating system and other software (antivirus, management agents, etc.) some machines with 16GB of RAM do not have sufficient available memory for Tableau Server 2021.4 and later versions to start up successfully.
