Restore from .tsbak fails at '10% - Uninstalling Restore Service'.

In addition, the following error message is found in tabadmincontroller-*.log.

Caused by: com.tableausoftware.tabadmin.util.ZipUtils$UnsupportedTsbakCharsetException: Unsupported charset in tsbak file '<PathToBackupFIle.tsbak>'. Recreate using UTF-8.

  • Tableau Server 2018.3

Compress the .tsbak (.zip) file again with using utf-8.
  1. Make a copy of the .tsbak file that experiences restore issue. (This is to keep original file for safety)
  2. Rename the copied .tsbak file to '<fileName>.zip'.
  3. Unpack <fileName>.zip file with a unzip utility (for example, 7-zip).
  4. Compress <fileName> file with a zip utility using UTF-8 encoding.
  5. Rename '<fileName>.zip' to '<fileName>.tsbak'.
Note: Make sure that the Tableau Server Run As User has at least read permission for the new <fileName>.tsbak.
  6. Perform restore again with re-created <fileName>.tsbak file. (eg. tsm maintenance restore -f <fileName>.tsbak)
**For Step 4, one can use the 'Bandzip' utility to save it with the UTF-8 format**

The .tsbak file was encoded with some encoding other than UTF-8.
