RepoItem*.tmp Files in Temp Folder Consuming Disk Space

A large number of repoItem*.tmp files are located in the \Tableau\Tableau Server\data\tabsvc\temp folder. Some of these files takes considerable amount of space, and some of the files are several days old.

Tableau Server

Configure Tableau Server to remove these files more often.
  1. On the computer hosting Tableau Server, open the Command Prompt as an administrator and run one of the following commands:
    • On a 32-bit computer: cd "C:\Program Files\Tableau\Tableau Server\[version]\bin"
    • On a 64-bit computer: cd "C:\Program Files (x86)\Tableau\Tableau Server\[version]\bin"
  2. At the command prompt, run the following commands in order:
    • tabadmin stop
    • tabadmin set purge.files.retention_days 1
    • tabadmin config
    • tabadmin start
Note: "purge.files.retention_days" parameter is in days. In the example it is set to "1", but it is possible to set it to fractions. For example value of "0.5" should force Tableau Server to delete repoItem files every 12 hours.

When a view is loaded on Tableau Server, it is taken from Repository and a repoItem file is created as an additional copy of the Repository response. Those files work as a cache. By default, Tableau Server keeps those files for seven days.

Additional Information

In most cases, repoItem files are quite small and do not cause any issues with disk space.
