Tableau Prep: SAP HANA connectors for published SAP HANA datasources do not support initial variables prompts
Unable to connect to published live SAP HANA data source with variables prompts required.

Unlike Tableau Desktop, Tableau Prep Builder and Prep Conductor do not prompt for required variables of SAP HANA published datasources.

Without the variables set, the following error is displayed on Prep Builder:

Error in input “<DS NAME>”. Can't connect to datasource <DS NAME>. An error occurred while communicating with the data sourceA required variable might be missing a value. Open the variables window to provide the missing value. There was an error with the data source "". Verify that the data source is configured correctly.

For Tableau Prep Conductor, no error is displayed, but no data is available.

Environment

  • Tableau Prep Builder
  • Tableau Prep Conductor
  • SAP HANA

Resolution

Option 1

Connect to data source directly from Tableau Prep Builder (without publishing to Tableau Server).

Option 2

When publishing the data source, use Extract instead of Live connection.

Option 3

When connecting to the data source in Tableau Desktop, the following dialog will be displayed. Un-check the prompts to disable variables prompts, then publish the data source.
