Issue

When using Prep Builder 2022.4 or later to connect to any published data source on Tableau Server 2021.3 or earlier, the below error occurs:

Unable to add <table name> to the flow. Select the table's data source in the Connection pane and then try again.

Environment

  • Tableau Prep Builder 2022.4 and newer
  • Tableau Server 2021.3 and earlier

Resolution

Option 1:
Use Tableau Prep Builder version released before 2022.4 if continuing to use an older version of Tableau Server.

Option 2:
Upgrade Tableau Server version to 2021.4 or newer.

Cause

Starting with Tableau Prep Builder 2022.4, Prep Builder starts to use the REST API 3.14 version to get the datasource details, but Tableau Server 2021.3 and earlier does not support the REST API 3.14 version.

Additional Information

When using different major versions of Tableau Prep and Tableau Server, incompatibility issues may still occur as noted in the Tableau Online Help on Version Compatibility with Tableau Prep.

If you are using Prep Builder 2022.4 and newer, and your Prep Builder version is higher than your Tableau Server version, you may still receive a general incompatibility error or warning message as described in the Tableau Online Help link above.
