Non-SSL Requests are Made When Using Maps

Issue

When using maps in Tableau Desktop, one of the files needed for the functionality is requested from the mapping servers using an unsecured request.

Environment

  • Tableau Desktop 2019.2.0

Resolution

This behavior is caused by a known issue, ID 948005, and is currently under investigation.

In the meantime there is a workaround:

Add the port specification ":443" to the end of https://mapsconfig.tableau.com in the .tms file, for example:

<connection class="MapboxVector" data-url="v4" offline="" params-url="https://mapsconfig.tableau.com:443/v1/config.json" port="443" server="https://api.mapbox.com" url="styles/v1"/>

This file can be found in Documents\My Tableau Repository\Mapsources.

Cause

This behavior is caused by a known issue, ID 948005, and is currently under investigation.

Additional Information

According to the internet access requirements documentation, all Mapping communication is supposed to be made with SSL, For more information, see Internet Access Requirements.
