Issue

Tableau Desktop error when activating a product key:

No License found for 'TableauDesktop'

Environment

  • Tableau Desktop
  • Tableau Prep
  • Windows
  • Mac

Resolution

Visit the Tableau Customer Portal to obtain the current product key.

Please note: For new purchases, there may be no Desktop key issued in the Tableau Customer Portal.  This error can occur when trying to use the Tableau Server Creator key to activate Tableau Desktop.
  • With new purchases of a Creator seat, either a Tableau Cloud Site or a Tableau Server key will be issued.
  • Activating Tableau Desktop will use the LBLM activation method to "sign into server" which requires no product key.

If you are part of the Tableau Academic Program, please visit the Academic website to obtain a new product key and another year of use.

Cause

The product key has expired or the wrong type of key was used.

Tableau Server product keys start with "TS" and Tableau Desktop keys will begin with the letters "TC".

Additional Information

If a legacy Tableau Prep key is being used (the key begins with "TP"), check the Tableau Customer Portal or talk to the Tableau Administrator at your company to determine if a new "TC" key is available for use.  TP keys are being replaced with Tableau Creator keys (start with "TC") which allow use of both Tableau Desktop and Tableau Prep Builder.

Keys starting with "TS" are to be activated on Tableau Server only.
