Issue

When you publish a workbook to Tableau Cloud, the following message occurs:

Data Extract Required
The Tableau server you are publishing to does not permit external database connections. Use the Data menu to create an extract for the following data source:
<data-source-name>

Environment

  • Tableau Cloud
  • Tableau Desktop
  • Live data connection

Resolution

For a workbook that uses a live connection to a data source type that is not listed below, you must create an extract in Tableau Desktop before you can publish the workbook to Tableau Cloud.

Follow these steps:

  1. Save extract as a .tds (Tableau Data Source) file.
  2. Publish the .tds file to Tableau Cloud.
  3. Connect to the published extract in Tableau Desktop.
  4. Publish the workbook to Tableau Cloud.

Cause

Tableau Cloud supports live connections only to data source types listed in Additional Information.

Additional Information

You can publish workbooks with live connections to the following data source types:
  • Google BigQuery
  • Amazon Redshift
  • MySQL, Microsoft SQL Server, and PostgreSQL data hosted with a cloud provider such as Amazon RDS or Microsoft Azure.
