Issue

When launching Tableau Prep on Windows, a JavaScript error occurs:

"Failed to get 'documents' path"

Environment

  • Tableau Desktop
  • Tableau Prep
  • Windows

Resolution

 Possible workarounds would be:

Option 1:

If the Documents location is just misconfigured, that is pointing to a non-existent folder, you can repair it manually by going to Documents -> Properties -> Location -> Reset to default.

Option 2:

If the issue is due to a problem in the mapped drive Documents location, you must launch Prep using your default user credentials, not elevated credentials.

To verify the Documents folder on Windows is configured to a valid location, follow these steps:
  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Right click on the Documents folder, select Properties. Switch to the Location tab.
  3. Click "Find Target…".

Cause

This is a known issue, ID 747530, that is under investigation. The error occurs if Tableau Prep is unable to identify the user's Documents folder location.

The configured or network-mapped Documents folder is inaccessible or removed on Windows, and Tableau Prep cannot find the default repository location.
