Issue

Tableau experiences intermittent backup failures with a java.io.IOException, specifically during scheduled runs. This problem occurs on both manual and scheduled backups, leading to recurring failures.

Below is the sample log error :
 
Caused by: java.io.IOException: Failed to delete original file 'X:Tableau\Tableau Server\data\tabsvc\tabadmincontroller\0\backup\test.tsbak' after copy to 'X:Tableau\Tableau Server\data\tabsvc\files\backups\test.tsbak

Resolution

 

  1. Grant Appropriate Permissions:

    • Ensure that the necessary permissions are assigned to the relevant users or accounts involved in Tableau processes. 
  2. Eliminate Third-Party Software:

    • Identify and remove/exclude any third-party software, such as antivirus programs or other applications, that might interfere with Tableau operations. Some software might conflict with Tableau processes, causing backup failures.

    The error message IO error indicates an environmental issue. The root cause could be either:

    1. Permission problems associated with the run-as user account.
    2. Software conflicts, such as antivirus or third-party applications, impeding Tableau processes.
