Installing 2018.2.2 does not complete, installation process hangs on step 6

Issue

A fresh installation of 2018.2.2 does not complete, installation process hangs on step 6 of 40, eventually timing out after 9000 seconds.

Environment

  • Tableau Server 2018.2.2
  • Windows Server 2016

Resolution

Following these steps for a successful install of 2018.2.2:
  1. Ensure a backup of the instance has been created. 
  2. Run "tableau-server-obliterate.cmd -y -y -y" to stop the installation and remove the hung Tableau Server installation 
  3. Reinstall Tableau Server 2018.2.2
  4. Provide the domain when specifying Run As User account name, such as "example\tableaurunas" instead of "tableaurunas"

 

Cause

The Run As User name was provided without the domain which causes an error when installing tabsvc.

Additional Information

  • In place upgrades are not impacted.
  • In the control_tabsvc_node1-0.log in the data\tabsvc\logs\tabsvc directory under the Tableau Server data directory (default path will be C:\ProgramData\Tableau\Tableau Server\data\tabsvc\logs\tabsvc), one will see the following error:
ERROR com.tableausoftware.tabsvc.TabSvcControlApp - Exception while configuring process.
com.sun.jna.platform.win32.Win32Exception: The account name is invalid or does not exist, or the password is invalid for the account name specified.
