Issue

During installation of Tableau Server 2020.1.2, the following error was observed:

Initialization Error
This job failed due to unexpected error: 'ServiceOperationTimedoutException'
Initialization terminated at step 29 of 32. Finalizing the topology failed

Environment

  • Tableau Server 2020.1.2
  • Windows Server 2016
  • 12 Core Virtual Machine

Resolution

To resolve issue:
  1. Uninstall Tableau Server with the obliterate script. Use the -l switch to also deactivate all licenses
  2. Reinstall Tableau Server to the desired location and when you get to the point where you are presented with the license activation screen, STOP.
  3. Perform the offline activations from the command line for both 8 core licenses for a total of 16 cores
  4. Once both license keys are activated, refresh the browser and proceed with initialization
  5. That will allow the initialization to complete with the correct number of cores licensed

Cause

The Tableau Server was failing the initialization stage at step 29 of 32 because the license key that was activated during the installation process was for less cores than was present on the virtual machine on which it was being installed.

Additional Information

The issue is due to using 2 different license keys for 8 cores each to activate a Tableau Server with 16 cores. During the initialization, the interface only allows inputting 1 license key by design.
