- Tableau Server 2018.2 or later
- Microsoft Edge Browser
- Internet Explorer Browser
ResolutionThis issue can be worked around by using 'localhost' or the IP address instead of the domain name.
CauseThe domain name contains an underscore or other invalid character. Microsoft Edge does not accept cookies from invalid domain names, causing a blank screen to be displayed when attempting to complete the installation/upgrade of Tableau Server using the web UI.
Additional InformationMicrosoft Edge or Internet Explorer browser will redirect to a login page instead of loading the TSM UI when the domain name contains an underscore or other invalid character.
From Microsoft's Internet Explorer Cookie Internals FAQ:
Q5: IE won’t set a cookie when the hostname/domain contains an underscore?
A: Correct. Technically, an underscore (like this _ ) is not a DNS character, and while Windows will let you use an underscore when naming your machine, it warns you that doing so may cause problems. One such problem is that WinINET blocks attempts to set cookies on such domains. See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316112/en-us
