HTML in Fields Displays as Plain Text

Published: 16 May 2014
Last Modified Date: 20 Dec 2019

Issue

When adding a dimension that contains HTML code, the data is displayed in plain text, exposing the HTML tags.

Environment

Tableau Desktop

Resolution

Use string functions to remove the HTML tags. For example, REPLACE(string, substring, replacement) could be used if the HTML tags are all the same, or LEFT(string, number) if the HTML tags are only at the end and the string you want to keep is of a consistent length. For more information, see String Functions.

Cause

The ability to format data in a field by using HTML is not currently available in Tableau Desktop.
